He started writing while a student and conjointly with his brother
Joseph he produced short stories. After he completed his studies, he
devoted himself entirely to literature. during the World War he
translated from French poetry and introduced Anglo American
philosophy. In the time of national persecution in Austria he
embraced journalism. After the World War he wrote dramas which
produced at the Municipal Theater in Prague (for example he produced
Shelley's Cenci which was the first performance of the play).

been excluded from the Institute of Art together with 43 other pupils
on account of his new ideas. In 1902 he became more interested in
symbolism through a psychological breakdown. He
made new research and in
1907 he passed over to the classicism. He has written lyrics, novels
and dramatical compositions: in the period of liberality and human
progress - history and philosophical ideas in novels; in the period
of Aleksander - old forms.

In 1896 he was first published, in 1900 he wrote the first fables, in
1903 he obtained a prize at a dramatical competition, in 1906 he was
an emigrant, in 1914 he became an editor-in-Chief of a newspaper in
Wilno and in 1920 he was a volunteer soldier. The fables of B. Hertz
imitate La Fontaine only in their form, their themes are his own and
are originals. They touch various political and social questions in
the form of poetry which the Russian census would not have permitted
to touch frankly, thus these fables are historical documents and they
belong to the fight for the Polish independence.

of Post at Prague and is the founder of the Post-Museum at Prague. He
has worked as a poet since 1892 and is head of the symbolistic
poetry-school and is a reviewer.

the psychical tension and disillusioned pessimism of modern man".

was a physician and then he abandoned medicine for literature. He is
a poet, humorist, essayist, critic, translator and journalist He was
nominated in 1922 as Professor of French literature at the University
of Poznan (did not accept the offer). Being unable to find an editor
for his translating of the chefs-d'oeuvre of French literature, he
founded an edition under the name of "Bibliothèque de Boy".
Publications: collections of poetries, 13 volumes of theater
criticism, some twenty volumes of essays, more than 100 volumes of
the most prominent works of French literature, among which are
complete works of Molière, Rabelais, Montaigne, and many
others.
