During a prolonged sojourn in the Holy Land and Syria he explored in
1896, 1897 and 1898 the Biblical Negeb, Edom and Moab, the classical
Arabia Petraea. He returned to these territories again in 1900, 1901
and 1902. His scientific aim was the investigation of the topography
and ethnology of these lands. East of Moab he discovered (1898) the
famous Quisair Amra, built in the desert by Caliph Walid II. (about
744) as his residence. After 1908 he carried out extensive
explorations in northern Arabia and in the adjacent Meopotamian
lands. From 1908-1909 he worked in the classical Arabian Desert. In
1910 he conducted field investigations to establish the location of
the Biblical Mount Sinai as well as the route of the Exodus and the
camping grounds of the Midianite and Ishmaeilite tribes. In 1912 he
visited Palmyrena, the right banks of the middle Euphrates and
Tigris, and the surroundings of the Shiite cities of Kerbela and
Nejef. In 10914 and 1915 he completed reconnaissance surveys of the
lower course of the river Tartar in the interior of Mesopotamia, left
bank of middle Euphrates and of the Chalybonitis of Ptolemy. Holding
the rank of Major-General he headed Archduke Hubert's mission to
Asia-Minor, Syria and Palestine in 1917.
